The construction of the Temple was begun by Guru Ramdas ji in the 16th century and in 19th century; Maharaj Ranjit Singh covered the upper floors of the Gurdwara with Gold.  The Harmandir Sahib is considered Holy by Sikhs and holiest text of Sikhism , the Guru Granth Sahib, is always present inside the Gurdwara.
